The day of priestly ordination is approaching for many seminarians, and in these final months of spiritual preparation for this important event, the preparation of the vestments that will be worn for the first time on that occasion is also taking place. During the ordination rite, there are gestures and signs that strongly emphasize the tasks and functions of the newly ordained. An important moment is the “vesting”, in which the elect, now ordained, wear the characteristic vestments of the priest: the presbyteral stole and the chasuble. In today’s article on our blog, we will discuss the chasuble. Why is it such an important symbol of the priesthood, and how do you choose the right one?

What is the chasuble?
As with many other liturgical vestments, the chasuble also has its origins in Roman and Greek clothing. The poenula, from which the chasuble originated, was initially a garment used to protect from rain and wind, and therefore it was made of heavy wool. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, it became an overgarment more commonly worn in daily life, as evidenced by numerous sculptures depicting men wearing this type of garment. The garment had a round shape and was closed on all sides except for the opening through which the head would pass. Its use by Roman senators further enhanced its materials and decorations. It is in Gaul that, due to its enveloping shape and protective function, it was given the name casula, meaning “little house,” which remains in use today.
The chasuble is the vestment worn over all others. For this reason, throughout the centuries, liturgists have interpreted the chasuble as a symbol of charity that covers sins and of love that encompasses all virtues. The prayer for vesting is inspired by the Letter to the Colossians (3:14): “And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” Its wide shape helps the celebrant “dispersonalize” and blend into the celebration, leaving space for the true protagonist, Jesus.
The priestly ordination chasuble
Often a gift from the family or close ones of the priest, the chasuble of ordination is an important vestment that serves as a reminder of the day when the seminarian says his “Here I am” to the Lord. Here are some tips for choosing and creating the right chasuble for you. There are two fundamental aspects that characterize the chasuble for ordination: the design and the fabric.
The drawing

The embroidery on the chasuble for ordination can be placed at the center of the mantle, along the stole, and around the neck. Our design portfolio is very extensive, ranging from classic motifs to more modern decorations. We can hand-embroider a design of your own or our designers can create a custom design based on your ideas, as well as modify an existing design. In previous years, we have embroidered chasubles for ordinations with symbols such as the cross, the Paschal lamb, the pelican, the IHS symbol, the Marian crest, and much more. The choice of design can be influenced by your affinity for a particular symbol that highlights your devotion or by the future use you intend for the chasuble. For instance, a chasuble with the lamb symbol is very well-suited for Easter celebrations. As an additional personal touch, the chosen priestly crest can also be embroidered.
The fabric of the chasuble

The chasuble is not just about embroidery and the fabric you choose can greatly influence the style of the chasuble. Arte Ricami offers a wide range of fabrics in all liturgical colors: from pure silk satin to cool wool, from elegant damask silk fabrics to natural fibers with a more rustic appearance, and even pure cashmere.
5 reasons to buy a hand-embroidered priestly ordination chasuble
1) Hand embroidery is the type of decoration that has characterized liturgical garments since the early centuries of the Church. It is the art that defines all the most important vestments of past centuries, and Arte Ricami strives to continue passing it down with passion to future generations.
2) Hand embroidery ensures flexibility in the choice of motif and design, as any decoration can be reproduced by hand on fabric.

3) Hand embroidery guarantees a unique creation, made just for you by our expert embroiderers. Every stitch on the fabric tells the story of a hand that worked with passion and dedication.
4) Hand embroidery adds value to your chasuble. A chasuble embroidered by hand is indeed a precious vestment whose value increases over time.
5) Hand embroidery is beautiful and elegant. The thickness of the threads intertwining, the shades of colors, the skill in placing the passementerie, and the dedication of hours of work make it a masterpiece of art!
